Scotland in September
Weather
As with the rest of the year September in September can be a good month for great weather. However it’s still a string of psuedo random weather events rather than a climate based predictable temperature or precipitation.
Waterproof footwear and outer wear is a good idea, as is multiple layers so you can adjust your clothing, regularly, to temperature changes!
We offer tours throughout the year and typically find September in Scotland is our busiest month, get in touch here before we’re fully booked!

Flora and Fauna
Toward the end of the month we’re starting to see some of the Autumnal colours appearing with the earlier to change trees like the Ash starting to turn. Throughout October and into mid November we’ll be able to enjoy the autumn colours mixed with the summer colours. The wildlife is busy hoarding the late summer fruits and nuts so are still active throughout the land. At the end of August and into early September the male and juvenile Ospreys around Scotland will start their journey to Africa where they over-winter. The Juveniles won’t return for a few years.
Do note there is NO poison Oak, NO poison Ivy and NO poison Summac in Scotland!
We run tours all year round, September is a fantastic month to visit Scotland and we’re often very busy so enquire here before we’re fully booked!
Events
There’s a lot on in September, harvest celebrations, art festivals, the last of the summer beer festivals too! Again there’s so much we can’t cover it all so have picked a few of our favourites!
Towards the start of the month there’s the brilliant (6th and 7th), Distilled Spirit of Speyside festival – some of the suppliers of the Spirit of Speyside in May under the roof of Elgin Town Hall! Enjoy a masterclass or 2 at this festival to improve your knowledge and understanding of the regions most famous product! It’s not just whisky though as the regions other top producers come out to this one!
6th to 8th September there’s the fantastic Dundee Flower and Food festival showcasing some of the regions best food, locally grown produce as well as producers of food and drink from around Tayside and from further afield. There’s crafts, chainsaw carving, fruit, flower and vegetable show tents spread over 3 days!
The first Saturday in September is the ever popular Braemar Gathering, tickets to this event sell out very quickly so get yours today! Our guides would be happy to attend with you to ensure you understand the event and what’s going on. This is one of the oldest gatherings in the country with gatherings going on for 900 years and attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II every year since 1952!
There’s other highland games for example Pitclochry on the 14th.
Probably mid month another Music and Beer festival in Blair Athol – To be released!
Seasonal Food

After the long, warm (hopefully) summer our harvests are becoming ready around the country. With the Barley and Wheat being the most obvious of the fields to be cut. Potatoes will be gathered towards the end of the month along with leeks, carrots, onions, turnips and other root vegetables.
From the trees we’ll be seeing the Sloes and Damsons (small plums used for flavouring gin). Apples and later in the month Pears will be available too. Strawberries will still be available from the farms and on the roadside there will be blackberries, and sometimes black currants too.
There’s plenty of game available as well as the usual selection of farmed meat.
Finally the sea, which surrounds us on 3 sides, still manages to offer the best in the world.
