Scotland in August
Weather
Touring Scotland in August is a beautiful time of year to visit. The days are very long but shortening as we head now towards the equinox and away from the solstice. It’s a great time of year for outdoor pursuits such as Golf, hillwalking, camping and more generally being a tourist too.
Expect some warm sunny days punctuated by showers and the occasional rainy day. You’ll need warmer clothes in the evening and nights – a light jacket / wind stopper is ideal. The key, as always, to dealing with Scottish weather is to use layers!
We offer tours throughout the year and typically find August in Scotland is a busy month, get in touch here before we’re fully booked!

Flora and Fauna
Our climate, with a great mixture of wet and warm weather creates a very green natural environment. By August every summer plant is well into the growing season and we’re starting to see some fruiting from the late summer and autumn fruiting plants. Do note there is NO poison Oak, NO poison Ivy and NO poison Summac in Scotland!
All of Scotland is alive with bird song and the rustle of critters in the undergrowth. We’ll see lots of the native creatures as well as many farmed animals – Sheep and cattle being the main meat growth we’ll see in the fields. The Barley and Wheat will be starting to go golden and European Buzzards and Kestrels will be a regular sighting and the Golden Eagle may be seen in some places too! In the right area, Otters, Beavers, Seals and Red Squirrels are still easy sightings.
We run tours all year round, August is a fantastic month to visit Scotland and we’re often very busy so enquire here before we’re fully booked!
Events

August is prime time on the Scottish events calendar! There’s just too many for this site to list everything so our favourite highlights are below!
The 2nd to the 24th sees the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Military bands from around the world perform and delight!
At the same time (2nd to 26th) Edinburghs International Fringe Festival runs. With world renowned artists and comedians making their way to Edinburgh you’re sure to find something!
15,000 people enjoy the North Berwick Highland Games on the 10th August! Why not head there with one of our guides who can help you understand the games and what’s happening!?
In nearly every town and village each weekend you’ll find something on! For example a small coastal fishing village event – Johnshaven Fish festival is generally an August weekend and great fun for all the family!
Seasonal Food
On the roadside we’ll be able to find wild raspberries, blackberries and even occasionally blueberries! The small number of apple farmers in Scotland are starting to pick in late August while the farms are starting to produce Lamb again! From the sea everything is in harvest, so enjoying Scottish seafood at its’ best is possible.
Grouse shooting season starts on ‘The Glorious Twelfth’ so you may find some specialist restaurants have it available on their menu! Towards the end of the month Pheasant shooting opens, they are bred for the occasion and whilst the Grouse shoots may struggle for numbers, the pheasant shoots do not!
