July in Scotland
Weather
Touring Scotland in July is a beautiful time of year to visit. The days are very long as we head away from the summer solstice with around 18 hours of daylight in more northern areas. It’s a great time of year for outdoor pursuits such as Golf, hillwalking, camping and more generally being a tourist too.
Expect warm sunny days punctuated by showers and the occasional rainy day. You’ll need warmer clothes in the evening and nights – a light jacket / wind stopper is ideal. The key, as always, to dealing with Scottish weather is to use layers!

Flora and Fauna
Our climate, with a great mixture of wet and warm weather creates a very green natural environment. By the end of July every summer plant is well into the growing season. In addition nearly all the summer flowers are out. Also on tour we’ll definitely flowering Scottish thistle. Do note there is NO poison Oak, NO poison Ivy and NO poison Summac in Scotland!
As mentioned in the June post, the midge will be out and about over the whole country. Windy days keep them at bay. Damp, still days on the west coast mean they’ll be visiting.
All of Scotland is alive with bird song and the rustle of critters in the undergrowth. We’ll see lots of the native creatures as well as many farmed animals – Sheep and cattle being the main meat growth we’ll see in the fields.
European Buzzards and Kestrels will be a regular sighting and the Golden Eagle may be seen in some places too! In the right area, Otters, Beavers, Seals and Red Squirrels are also possible sightings.

Events

The summer season of events is in full swing, there are events in nearly every town and city! Highland game season is in full flow and there’s a games on every weekend. There’s so much on during July in Scotland we’ve had to pick our favourite few events!
Skye Festival 2019 runs from July 3rd to August 23rd – with multiple small halls hosting rural arts and live music. Have a look at their website for when you’re on the island for what’s on!
Stonehaven Folk Festival runs July 12th to 14th and features live music, workshops and ceilidh’s. The small coastal village of Stonehaven is host with a welcoming and energetic atmosphere.
If vehicles are more your thing then The Scottish Car Show my be just for you. On the 14th July enjoy the fantastic array of cars from modern to old!
On the 20th of July, the Highland Capital, Inverness hosts their Highland Games. With competitors in every event including the piping competitions these highland games are sure to be a feature of any trip to Scotland!
Seasonal Food
Seafood and farmed food is in full swing now! However there’s sometimes a reduction in available molluscs at this time of year. However Scotland is still home to some of the best fresh fish in the world!
