March in Scotland
Weather
Touring Scotland in March is still going to show snow on the hilltops and sometimes at lower levels too. 2018 brought the ‘Beast from the East’ which brought a couple of days bad weather to the country. But it did not last long and is a once in 50 years event! Towards the end of the month, it is a bit warmer and the daylight hours are getting longer too. “The nights are fair drawing out” is a common phrase among folks towards the end of March as we go into British Summer Time and the clocks change. We offer tours throughout the year and typically find March is when we start to get busy, get in touch here before we’re fully booked!

Flora and Fauna
Daffodils start to make their show at the start of the month, with Tulips following on. Hyacinths should be in full scented flower by now and most trees and plants will be showing off their buds of spring. Even the grass is starting to grow again and regain some of the vibrancy Scotland is known for.

The creatures we’ll see on tour are the Red Deer who are still staying off the hills overnight at least, on the wing we’ll see the Pink Footed Goose (and other Geese varieties) migrating as well as Birds of Prey such as Ospreys returning to their nests (late March / Early April). There’s also a chance to see the Puffin and other sea birds who return to Scotland towards the end of March. With our bespoke tours we can take you to see these wonderful creatures, enquire here!
Events
The pre-summer season of events is starting to get into full swing, with events in nearly every town and city; a few of our favourites are listed here!
The Inverness Music Festival starts in February but carries on into March… a competitive festival gives it a twist.
From the middle of the month to the end Glasgow hosts an International Comedy Festival as they say ‘People make Glasgow’!
The last 10 days of March gets Aberdeen all Jazzy with the Aberdeen International Jazz Festival at the time of writing we’re still waiting for details of all the acts but previous years have shown this to be one of the best low key music festivals in Scotland.
Seasonal Food
From the farm we’re starting to see fresh Strawberries making it onto the plates! Yes, using tunnels and heating the farmers can now start picking fresh Scottish berries in March! There’s an abundance of root vegetables and brassicas still coming from the land too, beetroots, turnips, carrots and parsnips aplenty! New season lamb is starting to arrive in the butchers and Scottish Lamb is unbeatable. From the sea, shell fish is still a good option with Lobster, Scallops and razor clams some of our favourites.
